TPO

Thermoplastic Polyolefin is a single-ply roofing membrane that is one of the fastest growing commercial roofing systems on the market. TPO membrane roofing systems are made up of a single layer of synthetics and reinforcing scrim that can be used to cover flat roofs and low-slope roofs.

One of the outstanding features of TPO is that it’s made from environment-friendly and recyclable materials that have UV-resistant properties that assist in the reduction of home energy consumption. If it’s installed and maintained properly, you can expect that it will last for up to 30 years or more.

TPO also has dirt build-up, tears, and puncture-resistant properties, making it a low maintenance roofing system. However, it’s less resistant to chemicals, so it’s not the best option if it will be exposed to harsh chemicals or grease. As part of its easy maintenance, it can be repaired through several methods like scoring by using a kitchen scrubber, M1 sealant to patch holes, and to prime through a TPO primer.

This type of roofing system is best installed through ballasted installation wherein the membrane is laid across the substrate rather than being glued or fastened in one area. There’s a notion that this single-ply membrane roofing is expensive because it’s commonly used as a commercial roofing material, but it’s one of the roofing systems that have several types of catering to different types of budgets.

Thermoplastic Polyolefin has forms of geoengineering, such as the reflective surface that can reflect UV rays making it a “cool roof.” This roofing membrane is manufactured in sheets 10, 12, or 20 feet wide to cater to a larger target market. It may have a lot of advantages, but it also has its downsides like it’s vulnerable to leaks and it tends to get brittle over time.
